Larry style happiness

The hba's do work! Ha.

I've put them into my new R710s which arrived first thing and the hba's bios come straight up no bother.

Three servers with xen installed in a day. Ten to xen and all that. Once my rack, SAN and all my cabling arrives I'll be happily pooling my servers.

I've decided on the most important thing too. Server naming convensions. My physical servers are gold, silver and platinum and the virtual servers will be less precious metals such as copper, zinc and lead.

Exciting Plans

After working at my current school for two and a half years I have the chance to really put my mark on the network.

This summer we plan to replace all our tin, build a new active directory and virtualize the whole thing.

So on Thursday I ordered the following...
3x Dell R710 with twin X5560s, 24GB RAM (1333), twin 160GB SAS, 8 Gigabit nics, with twin PSUs and a qlogic 4062c iscsi twin port HBA.

1x Dell MD3000i San, twin controller, twin PSUs, with 12x 600gb 15k SAS.

2x HP Procurve 2910al gigabit switches.

5x APC 750va Rack mount UPS' (2u).

1x 42u rack.

1x 15" TFT drawer console.

Lots of colour coded cables and three copies of 2008 R2 datacentre.

Hopefully it will all have arrived by the end of this week and I can start plugging it all together.

After spending a lot of time reading comparing vmware, hyper-v and xen, I have decided to use xenserver based on features and cost. I'll try to expand on that decision when I have time.
